Hi Michael,

The Memorial is presently focusing its efforts on collecting photographs of the 102,000 men and women who appear on the Memorial's Roll of Honour. Where possible, we're looking to borrow original photographs so that an archival quality reproduction can be made in our Multimedia laboratory. The photographs will then be returned once duplication has been completed. The best way to submit the original photographs is to send them to:

Roll of Honour Project
Photographs Section
Australian War Memorial
GPO Box 345
CANBERRA ACT 2601

Alternatively, if you're not comfortable in submitting original photographs, we do accept them on CD. We ask that people have photographs professionally scanned at a Photographic store at 600dpi and in TIFF file format.

Thank you for your interest Michael,

Regards,

How does one submit these photos?

I Have photos of surviving relatives. I'm also currently speaking to a long lost relative that may have an original picture of on of our relives who was killed in Messines on the 07/06/1917. All are in there WW1 uniforms.
It would also be great to see the portraits of those who survived and served in the war.

I also have 2 who served in the second world war.
Thank you.

Ms. Ellison,

Perhaps there's some helpful information.

Firstly, there is a plaque in Darwin commemorating those who perished on USS Peary near the Darwin Cenotaph, although it does not record the names of those who died.

See an image here:

http://www.skp.com.au/memorials/pages/80019.htm

There is also the USS Peary Memorial in Esplanade Park, Darwin, See this link:

http://www.skp.com.au/memorials2/pages/80019.htm

Amongst the list of men killed are: George S. Radinski and Victor F. Radinski.

This is from a trascription of the plaque, and the different spelling may be a simple transcription error, or indeed that may be how it is spelled on the plaque.

This data comes from the website War Memorials in Australia which was a project of the late Michael Southwell-Keely:

http://www.skp.com.au/memorials2/default.htm

Here is photograph of the ship going down:

http://www.territorystories.nt.gov.au/handle/10070/24890

Here is an eyewitness account:

http://www.australiansatwar.com.au/stories/stories.asp?war=W2&id=196

Eventually, I am sure of your inquiry here will get through to some good soul in Darwin who will go and look at the plaque and confirm exact details for you.

I understand also from Ken Inglis' book Sacred Places, that much of his research into war memorials around australia now rests at the AWM, so maybe the AWM can answer your query better than this.

If you go to the American Battle Monuments Commission search page here:

http://www.abmc.gov/search/wwii.php

and type in "Radzinski" you will find the war graves of your uncles are in Manila, together with their serial numbers, although an incorrect date of death is recorded in the online database, being 20-Feb-43.

The stark beauty of their final resting place can be seen here:

http://www.abmc.gov/cemeteries/cemeteries/ml.php

If I may help you further, go to my website through the link in the comment header and leave a comment.

I believe my two uncles, Victor and George Radzinski, were on the USS Peary which was sunk in Darwin Harbor on 2/19/42. I have found a photograph of a memorial listing those who perished in that attack. However, you cannot read the names. I would love to find a photograph of that memorial or even a confirmation that that is where they lost their lives.

Can you help?
